Bertolina is a volatile and intense piece which challenges the performers and the spectators alike, testing endurance. It leaves the dancers breathless as they swirl through space in percussive rhythm, creating structures and shapes which constantly change as if gripped by a whirlwind. The spectator is also overwhelmed and seized by the abundance of movement and sound, the space packed with non-stop movement and the compulsive pace.
Sharon Eyal corresponds in this piece with ethnic dance from Africa and Spain and with the emptiness of pop culture. Bertolina bears her unique movement signature with a multi-layered complex choreography which unfolds easily into its parts
The electric and rich music includes Spanish music, electronic music, techno, alternative Israeli rock, alternative 80's and Bedroom Folk.
The costumes were designed by Micky Avni who comes from architecture and interior styling. They were produced in a complex process in which a special costume was created for each dancer with prints of objects and photographes which were assembled in particular for each specific item.
Bertolina is the forth piece Sharon Eyal has created for Batsheva and Batsheva Ensemble in the past three years.
