DANSGROEP AMSTERDAM
FIER!
Dansgroep Amsterdam’s first programme presents a revival of de Châtels classic Lines and new work by Itzik Galili and two guest choreographers.
Together with guest choreographers Monique Duurvoort (Amsterdam) and Mark Baldwin (Great Britain) de Châtel and Galili present a diverse and topical programme, combining existing and new work, dance and visual art. Dansgroep Amsterdam aims to function as a platform for contemporary dance by bringing together young choreographers, talented dancers and promising art designers.
Krisztina de Châtel - Lines
With Lines (1979) Krisztina de Châtel looks back on her minimalist period. A cage of neon tubes designed by Jan van Munster and music by Philip Glass inspired her to create this work for five female dancers.
Critic Eva van Schaik: 'Five dancers dressed in white visualize the permanently shifting spatial patterns: stern and imperturbable, they shape circles, diagonals, crosses, squares and straight lines…the energy is ever-present. This is the minimal force that makes us walk upright, makes us breathe and therefore makes us persevere.'
Itzik Galili – new work
In response, choreographer Itzik Galili makes a new work for a group of male dancers. He takes on the challenge to answer the striving force and rhythmical complexity of Michael Gordons Weather One for string orchestra. In this new choreography he again works with lighting designer Yaron Abulafia, the recipient of an international lighting design prize for 2008.
Monique Duurvoort – new work
Young choreographer Monique Duurvoort combines movements from urban and modern dance in her work. In Fier! she takes on the challenge, offered by de Châtel, to make a new choreography giving visual art a prominent place, in collaboration with the promising theatre and lighting designer Theun Mosk.
Mark Baldwin – new work
Mark Baldwin is the artistic director of Rambert Dance Company, a leading contemporary dance company in Britain. His style of choreography shows a strong intellectual and physical orientation and a striking use of space. For his debut in the Netherlands he chose music by Dutch composer Louis Andriessen: M is for Man, Music, Mozart. Designer Michael Howells, known for his work in movies and fashion, creates the set and costumes.
