In Kalota, Krisztina de Châtel returns to her roots. As a prelude to this new choreography, she asked her compatriot József Horváth to study a dance phrase with her dancers. The basis of this dance material comes from Kalotaszeg, a region in Transylvania where the local Hungarian population is keeping musical and dance traditions alive. Their dances are earthly, rhythmical and energetic. Besides the sounds produced by the musicians – usually on violin, bass and cymbals – the double-quick clapping of the dancers’ hands resounds as they clap their hands and slap their legs, chest and boots. Just as in Pulse (2007), Krisztina de Châtel chose music by Austro-Hungarian composer György Ligeti to accompany her choreography. His compositions also resound with the melodies and rhythms of Hungarian folk music.
