DANSGROEP AMSTERDAM

RAAK

Striking combination programme by Dansgroep Amsterdam

Dansgroep Amsterdam will present its new joint programme Raak during the premiere on Saturday 20 March in Theater Bellevue, Amsterdam. In addition to new work by artistic directors Krisztina de Châtel and Itzik Galili, the programme will include the new Bittersweet by guest choreographer Liat Waysbort.

Every spring Dansgroep Amsterdam, the city company for contemporary dance in Amsterdam, compiles a programme in which choreographies by the artistic directors are combined with the work of guest choreographers from the Netherlands and abroad. This time Amsterdam-based choreographer Liat Waysbort will be Dansgroep Amsterdam’s guest. After four performances in Theater Bellevue, Raak will tour theatres in the Netherlands and travel to Hannover, Germany.

Striking triptych
Raak presents three works that are very different in both style and theme and form a striking triptych: topical and critical, vulnerable and poetic, raw and physical.

KRISZTINA DE CHÂTEL - WALTZ
Filmmaker Ari Folman’s critical film Waltz with Bashir was the first inspiration for Waltz. While we waltz on in an era of war, crisis and depression, choreographer Krisztina de Châtel and a group of dancers challenge hypocrisy and pretence.

ITZIK GALILI - OR
Physical lighting, poetic movement, the body as essence – the characteristic features of Itzik Galili’s work are apparent in his new choreography, for which theatrical percussion group Percossa developed a new composition.

LIAT WAYSBORT - BITTERSWEET
Liat Waysbort’s dance language is often described as intensely physical, slightly absurd, warm and radical. Bittersweet is the second work in which she lets herself be inspired by the image and character of ‘The King’. Waysbort explores a world in which vulnerability is masked by pose.

Cooperation
By joining forces in Dansgroep Amsterdam, choreographers Krisztina de Châtel and Itzik Galili aim to not only develop and continue their own repertoire, but also to create a platform for contemporary dance where guest choreographers, young dance producers, visual artists, lighting designers and composers come together.

Raak offers choreographer Liat Waysbort the opportunity to work with the highly qualified dancers of Dansgroep Amsterdam. Waysbort is one of the pivotal artists at Dansateliers, where she left her mark with the evening-length performance Reality is shaped by recalling (2009), and where she is receiving support in the development of her career. She is also a teacher on the Modern Theatre Dance programme at the Amsterdam School of the Arts.

The cooperation between Itzik Galili and Percossa can be traced to the days of Galili Dance: the theatrical percussion group composed works for See under X (2003), Peeled and Me (2004), Heads or Tales (2007) and A Linha Curva (2005, rerun 2009) among others. This last choreography was nominated for the Critic’s Circle National Dance Awards 2009 as well as the Laurence Olivier Award 2010, one of the most prestigious theatre awards in the United Kingdom. Percossa’s musicians have created a new composition to accompany Galili’s new choreography Or.

Krisztina de Châtel invited Niek Kortekaas to make the scenography for her new work Waltz. Previous cooperation between the two took place 1989 (Dualis), 1990 (Imperium) and 2004 (I-Space). De Châtel asked Han Otten to make an adaptation of Johann Strauss’s waltz music, including the classic An der schönen blauen Donau. Otten previously made soundscapes for de Châtel’s works, including Zooi (2005).
