(play) by choreographer Kenneth Kvarnström combines
dance with live classical music and fashion. It is produced
in collaboration with the NorrlandsOpera from Sweden.
This unique and substantial investment will only run for
three performances in Helsinki.
To create this multi-part production, Kvarnström combines
his creative powers with seven dancers, three fashion
designers, a lighting designer and six musicians. Every part
of (play) has its own theme and look designed by a different
fashion designer. Among those designing the visual look of
the production are Martin Bergström, the renaissance man
of the fashion world, the award-winning and widely-praised
Helena Hörstedt, who designs for her own brand in Sweden,
and Erika Turunen, a well-known costume designer for
Finnish modern dance, ballet and opera productions. The
staging and lighting designs that pull the whole production
together are the work of Jens Sethzman from Sweden.
The actual production focuses on six brilliant dancers from
Helsinki Dance Company: Kenneth Bruun Carlson,
Sofia Karlsson, Kai Lähdesmäki, Janne Marja-aho,
Valtteri Raekallio and Terhi Vaimala. In addition,
Cilla Olsen, a long-term cooperation partner of Kenneth
Kvarnström's, is visiting from Sweden.
(play) includes music from Bach, Chopin, Philip Glass
and Shostakovich, among others. The music is performed
by a string quartet from NorrlandsOperans Symfoniorkester
together with the soloists Asuka Nakamura (piano) and
Jonas Nordberg (teorb).
Among other things, (play) explores the effect of music and
silence on a viewing experience. It is the second part of
Kvarnström's trilogy, which studies viewing. The first part
was the YOUMAKEME production, which premiered in
March 2011. The third part will premiere in February 2012.
