Without a passport or visa, Odysseus would today be a "sans papiers", a persona
non grata, eking out his existence in a pre-fabricated hostel for asylum-seekers, not
on the island Aia, where the demigoddess Circe once hospitably served him so well
and truly. Thus, Berlin's Podewil is converted into an ancient symposium, according
to the sacred rights of hospitality, where eating and drinking do not consist of a
quick snack in the interval but are an essential part of the enjoyment. These rights of
hospitality, which turn a blind eye to petty theft and should not place security
considerations above brotherliness, are themselves discussed. And so the duty to
treat all men as brothers is also applied to the audience of strangers, who are
attended to as if they were old friends.
