Ravel‘s Bolero has been danced innumerable times – often with the same images of lascivious eroticism. “I thought that for once it would be interesting not to associate the passionate devotion and powerful escalation in Ravel’s music with youthfulness and striking beauty” says Stephan Thoss. In his humorous and surprising interpretation of Bolero, six old ladies meet for coffee. After the usual exchange of pleasantries, petit fours and Ravel’s music bring some pizzazz into this seniors’ meeting. Carried away by the rhythm, the women go completely wild. They live out – up until the explosive finale – the eternal ritual of the birth of movement from the spirit of music.
