Dance and George Gershwin – this is nothing less than a great love story. Not only film classics from Hollywood's golden era, with stars like Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers or Gene Kelly, bear witness to this. It is above all the music of Gershwin himself, which only seems to be complete when combined with movement and dance. And so it was probably only a matter of time before Marco Goecke, too, would deal with this inimitable wanderer between the worlds of jazz and classical music. The musical wealth from which he could draw is immense and ranges from hits like Summertime, Someone to Watch over Me or The Man I Love to popular musical songs to Gershwin's orchestral works such as the Piano Concerto in F major. As to the interpreters, Goecke was also spoilt for choice. Jazz icons like Sarah Vaughan have dedicated legendary albums to Gershwin's songs, Janis Joplin has been inspired by Summertime to a spectacular, fierce blues version. Their voices accompany this production.
There might be a reason why Marco Goecke is only now tackling this ultimately danceable composer: Gershwin „wrote music for the feet“, as Fred Astaire once said. The artist, who, in his work, consistently focusses on the dancers' arms and torso and became famous with this vibrant style, explored new facets of choreography this time. He also faced another challenge: to rehearse and create under the given Corona conditions. The company and their artistic director are full of anticipation – and optimistic! Because although it it difficult to tell what the future holds in this time of uncertainty, Eric Gauthier does not hesitate for a second to make this prediction: „I am convinced that at the end of the show the audience will not only answer the question „Do You Love Gershwin?“ with a resounding yes – but also: „Do you Love Marco Goecke's Gershwin“?
