German choreographer Marco Goecke is considered the twenty-first century’s most original choreographer. He is the master of the dark ambience, suggestion, magic and absurdity and succeeds in being able to take audiences by surprise with each new ballet. His new ballet Garbo Laughs is the second work he has made at Nederlands Dans Theater (he created Nichts with Nederlands Dans Theater 2 in 2008). In Garbo Laughs, Goecke entices the spectator into his secretive world of black birds and hikers. ‘I also make silent movies,’ says Goecke in reference to Greta Garbo, one of the few actresses who was able make the switch successfully from silent to sound movies.
‘You keep watching, fascinated by his unconventional and destructive visual language…’ (De Telegraaf on Nichts by Marco Goecke)
