Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite (1970) is associate choreographer of Nederlands Dans Theater. Solo Echo is her fifth ballet for Nederlands Dans Theater 1. Pite sees this ballet as above all a reaction to two of Brahms’ Sonatas for cello and piano that have always served as touchstones for her throughout her creative life. She was also inspired by Lines for Winter, a poem by Mark Strand. Just like the poem by Strand and the music, Solo Echo evokes the melancholic atmosphere of winter. Combined with the powerful images of the body, it conveys a meaningful message about acceptance and loss to audiences.
