SAO PAULO DANCE COMPANY

PRESS CLIPPINGS

FROM HIDE AND SEEK TO TRANCE - THE BROAD RANGE OF SAO PAULO DANCE
Three performances revealed three very different facets of an exquisite young dance ensemble. This week the Sao Paulo Dance Company, founded in 2008, performed at Bayer Kultur and was enthusiastically acclaimed by the audience in the sold out Forum Hall. (...) Following that energy kick, the soft and flowing choreography “Gnawa” by Nacho Duato revealed the graceful side of the Brazilian dance company, which has (understandably) risen very quickly to the top of the Latin-American dance scene. The strengths of this piece were impeccable posture and perfectly curved slow motion in apparent weightlessness. This quiet sensuality developed into a heated mood, via a large dynamic arc. From soft mysticism to a wild crowd dancing in trance, the ensemble of fourteen dancers portrayed the ritual of a dervish community in “Gnawa”.

A DANCE COMPANY OF HIGH MUSICALITY
The Sao Paulo Dance Company performed a symphony of corporeality in four tableaus on Bonn’s opera stage. Since its foundation by the state department of Brazil’s most southern metropolis in 2008, Inês Bogéa has led the ensemble. Whoever thinks that this is not the best of origins will be disabused. It is not an ensemble that dances around its stars. It surely has some, but a certain natural anonymity is more essential. (...) A shared experience is part of the Brazilian way of life. For that reason, every solo routine grows out of the ensemble and reverts to it.

A DANCE FULL OF CONTRASTS
On Saturday, the Sao Paulo Dance Company brought an evening of ballet extraordinaire to the sold out auditorium of the Graf-Zeppelin-Haus, with four very different choreographies. With calls of “bravo” and never-ending applause, the audience thanked the Brazilian dancers, who carried them off into a world full of grace, strength, aesthetics and poetry. (...) In this choreography the ensemble, founded in 2008, stands for vitality and romance with its soft movements, pirouettes and jumps. (...) After an evening like this, one can easily understand how the Sao Paulo Dance Company - under the artistic direction of Inês Bogéa - has come to occupy an established place within the international dance world in such a very short time.
