Theme and Variations is one of Balanchine´s masterpieces. Set to the final movement of Tchaikovsky´s Suite No. 3 for Orchestra, the piece consists of 12 variations. In the opening of the ballet, 12 dancers and a principal couple present the themes which will be later developed in the choreography. Throughout the piece, the principal couple intertwines their participations with the corps de ballet and the work ends with a grand polonaise for 26 dancers. Evoking the blooming of the imperial in Russia, Theme and Variations is a cornerstone of classical ballet´s repertory, a highlight of Balanchine´s choreographic refinement and greatness of style.
