The word comes from Tupi language
(pira = fish; cema = to go up) and defines the migratorymovement of fish toward the rivers sources, facing the streams down, for spawning. In its fiftieth anniversary year, 2025, Grupo Corpo chose the phenomenon of piracema as a symbol of its journey — a voyage driven by the irresistible desire to create, recreate, and resist, to return to the beginning and also advance into unknown territories.
With a soundtrack commissioned to the Brazilian/American multi-instrumentalist Clarice Assad, Piracema marks the first choreographic partnership between Rodrigo Pederneiras and Cassi Abranches, who now also becomes, as well, a resident choreographer.
Assad´s music begins with the tribal sounds, in an untouched natural environment, passes through the symphonic polyphony of the classical, and ends in the electronic, urban, contemporary music. The set, created by artistic director Paulo Pederneiras, brings together on immense panels 82,000 sardine can lids. The costume design was handled by the duo Susana Bastos and Marcelo Alvarenga, who start with a palette of earthy colors and move into blues and silvers.
