HESSISCHES STAATSBALLETT

REPERTOIRE

V/ertigo
Choreographies by Damien Jalet and Imre & Marne van Opstal
The double evening V/ertigo shows extreme situations of an uncertain life.

Between the desire to rise and the fear of falling, Damien Jalet sets the dancers in Skid

on a platform angled at 34 degrees that plunges directly into the orchestra pit.
orchestra pit. With only two entrances into the angled space, from above and below, the dancers
dancers:inside draw physical lines of action between appearance and disappearance. The human
body becomes the nexus of will, resistance, collapse, and resilience - in a world where physical relationship with others is often the only solace against the abyss of emptiness. Skid is the Hessisches Staatsballett's second collaboration with the exceptional Belgian-French choreographer Damien Jalet, following the choreography Thr(o)ugh, which was nominated for the 2017 DER FAUST theater prize.

The Dutch siblings Imre & Marne van Opstal are the shooting stars of the European dance scene. For the Hessisches Staatsballett they develop their new creation I'm afraid to forget your smile for six dancers including choirs and explore the moment of letting go as a transitional state in the surrender to loss. A flash so tangible and fleeting that time seems to stand still. After dance engagements at the renowned Nederlands Dans Theater (NDT) 1 & 2 and Batsheva Dance Company, the young duo van Opstal started a promising choreographic career at NDT back in 2016. In the meantime, they regularly create for the traditional Dutch house and beyond throughout Europe.
