HESSISCHES STAATSBALLETT
REPERTOIRE
The double evening Boléro/Force Majeure explores the known and the unknown with two new creations at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. Boléro by the French composer Maurice Ravel from 1928 advanced to become one of the most popular works for the concert stage. Named after the dance genre of the same name and written as a ballet for the famous dancer Ida Rubinstein, since its premiere in the choreography of Bronislava Nijinska, choreographers have repeatedly explored the catchy repetitive loops of Ravel's masterpiece.
Israeli choreographer Eyal Dadon, known for his unconventional approaches to classical material, will contrast the topicality of the famous musical piece with his energetic movement language in his interpretation Boléro.
Boléro will be performed together with the new creation Force Majeure by David Raymond & Tiffany Tregarthen. The Canadian duo is internationally known for their work with their own company, Out Innerspace Dance Theatre. Influenced by their long-term collaboration as dancers:in with choreographer extraordinaire Crystal Pite at Ballet BC, Raymond & Tregarthen now create choreography for major companies such as the world-renowned Nederlands Dans Theater and Ballet BC.
Force Majeure is the first commissioned creation for an ensemble from the German-speaking world. In the piece, Raymond & Tregarthen deal with the idea of a force majeure that affects life through human action or as a mysterious force of the universe. At the same time, they question whether this force majeure exists only outside of us or also within us. In their works, the duo goes beyond traditional aesthetics and forms. In the process, surrealistic-looking scene arrangements describe everyday situations that evoke an underlying comedy through a precise interplay of technical effects and physical expression. Both pieces will be accompanied by the Darmstadt State Orchestra.
