HESSISCHES STAATSBALLETT
REPERTOIRE
Igor Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps has gone down in (dance) history as a scandalous piece. The world premiere in the choreographic version by Vaslav Nijinsky for the Ballets Russes in Paris in 1913 was met by tumultuous protests, whistles and boos. Dance and music merged into an avant-garde total work of art that broke the visual and listening conventions of the time. Other danced versions of this music followed throughout the 20th century - for example by Mary Wigman, John Neumeier, Pina Bausch and Sasha Waltz.
With the double evening Le sacre du printemps, Hessisches Staatsballett joins the long history of the “Spring Sacrifice” with two contemporary positions by Bryan Arias and Edward Clug. In his commissioned work 29 May 1913, Arias reflects on the circumstances of the scandal-ridden world premiere and asks what avant-garde means in today's media-dominated world. To the music of his composer Dmitri Savchenko-Belski, the process of watching in the dialogue between stage and auditorium becomes a contemporary interpretation of the scandalous and develops a multi-layered view of the conditions of our cultural reflection.
On 29 May 1913 Bryan Arias is nominated for the FAUST-Preis 2020 in the "Choreography" category.
Edward Clug created in his choreography Le sacre du printemps, which premiered in 2012 at the Slovenian National Theater in Maribor, a subtle symbiosis of archaic basic themes and the hypnotic devotion of dance to music. On a stage immersed in water, his choreography minutely follows the effect of the music on the bodies of the dancers. Dissecting like a surgeon and at the same time creating space for individual design options, Clug not only consciously treats tradition but also takes a differentiated view of the history of the material's reception.
