The Night of Dionysos
is a production by Ismael Ivo in co-production with the State University of Music and Performing Arts, Stuttgart
Dionysus – God of intoxication, of ecstasy, of dance. Dionysus – God of immediate, shameless physicality, one with nature, one with himself. Dionysus – a God for our times? The answer seems close at hand: archaic powers and figures no longer have a place with us in the 21st century. Technology, fashion, norms, classifications and all sorts of systems regulate and define our body, our selves. And yet, doesn‘t Dionysus celebrate his greatest triumphs when all is – seemingly – settled? Doesn‘t he always interrupt when forms and appearances dominate? The body as endlessly mobile part of our existence is fundamentally opposed to all paralysis. It is the medium of change, living the culture of transformation.
In ”The Night of Dionysos“ Ismael Ivo puts his body at the disposal of research into Dionysian aspects of our times. With enthralling physical presence, he connects motifs of mythological nature to today‘s forms of rebellion against societal and personal coercion, even against the limitations of life itself. The result of this very personal research is a dance piece that examines the painful boundaries between rules and chaos, between vitality and fragility.
